Fairing & Surface Repairs Guide

Fairing and surface repair is used to correct imperfections in hulls, decks and structures before applying primer and topcoat systems. Proper surface preparation and fairing techniques ensure smooth finishes and long-term coating performance.

Select Your Repair Scenario

Minor Surface Repairs

Small scratches, sanding marks or shallow imperfections.

Minor Surface Repairs

Minor imperfections such as sanding scratches, pinholes or small dents should be repaired before applying the final primer system.

StepDescription
CleanWash surface thoroughly to remove dirt, wax, grease and contamination.
SandSand damaged area using P80 – P120 grit abrasive to expose solid substrate.
FillApply fairing compound or filler to repair surface.
Sand SmoothAfter cure, sand with P120 – P220 to restore smooth profile.
PrimeApply 545 Epoxy Primer or recommended primer system.

Recommended Repair Fillers

  • Awlfair LW (Lightweight fairing compound)
  • Awlfair FL (Flexible fairing compound)
  • Awlfair Surfacing Filler

Fairing Large Areas

Fairing compounds are used to correct hull distortions, repair structural areas, and create smooth surfaces prior to applying primer systems.

StepDescription
Prepare SubstrateSand or blast surface to proper mechanical profile.
PrimeApply corrosion protection primer such as Hullgard Extra or Max Cor CF.
Apply Fairing CompoundApply Awlfair compound to level surface.
ShapeSand with P36 – P80 to establish surface contour.
Final SandSand with P120 – P180 before primer.
PrimeApply 545 Epoxy Primer before topcoat system.

Recommended Fairing Compounds

  • Awlfair LW – lightweight fairing compound
  • Awlfair FL – flexible fairing compound for vibration areas
  • Awlfair Surfacing Filler – finishing filler

Sprayable Fairing Systems

Sprayable fairing compounds allow rapid fairing of large areas such as hull sides and superstructures.

StepDescription
Prepare SurfaceSand or blast substrate to required profile.
PrimeApply corrosion protection primer.
Apply Spray FairingApply epoxy sprayable fairing compound.
Block SandSand fairing with longboard using P80 – P120.
Final PrimerApply High Build or Ultra Build epoxy surfacing primer.
UndercoatApply 545 Epoxy Primer before topcoat.

Typical System

Primer → Spray Fairing Compound → High Build Primer → 545 Epoxy Primer → Awlgrip Topcoat

Important: Fairing compounds should only be applied over properly prepared and primed surfaces. Applying fairing directly to bare metal substrates is not recommended without proper corrosion protection primers.
