Kevlar

Kevlar® Fabrics & Aramid Reinforcements

Kevlar and aramid fabrics are high-performance composite reinforcement materials known for their exceptional impact resistance, toughness, and abrasion resistance. Unlike carbon fiber, Kevlar is designed to absorb energy rather than fracture, making it ideal for applications where durability and damage resistance are critical.

This category includes Kevlar and aramid fiber fabrics used in marine, airboat, Gheenoe, automotive, and composite fabrication projects where protection and reinforcement are required.

Why Use Kevlar?

Kevlar is commonly used in areas exposed to repeated impact, abrasion, or stress. It is often layered with fiberglass or carbon fiber to combine stiffness with toughness, improving overall laminate performance.

Common Applications

  • Airboat and Gheenoe hull reinforcement
  • High-impact and abrasion-prone marine areas
  • Keels, chines, and wear strips
  • Automotive body panels and protective components
  • Race car, off-road, and custom automotive parts
  • Composite fabrication and reinforcement

Kevlar vs Carbon Fiber

While carbon fiber excels in stiffness and weight reduction, Kevlar is selected for its ability to resist impact and tearing. Kevlar does not crack or shatter under load, making it a preferred reinforcement for protective and high-abuse areas.

Compatible Resin Systems

  • Epoxy resin (recommended)
  • Vinyl ester resin
  • Polyester resin (application dependent)

Benefits of Kevlar Reinforcement

  • Exceptional impact and abrasion resistance
  • High toughness and tear resistance
  • Ideal for high-wear and protective zones
  • Often combined with fiberglass or carbon fiber
  • Suitable for marine, automotive, and composite use

Working With Kevlar

Kevlar requires sharp cutting tools and proper lamination technique. Because of its toughness, sanding cured Kevlar is difficult, so careful trimming and layup planning are important.
