Hullgard Extra Epoxy Primer Application Guide

How and Why to Use Hullgard Extra

Hullgard Extra Epoxy Primer is a high-build, anticorrosive substrate primer designed to create a stable foundation for fairing compounds and finishing systems. It is commonly used after corrosion primers like Max Cor CF to build film thickness, improve adhesion, and prepare surfaces for Awlfair and topcoat systems.

This primer is ideal for aluminum, steel, and fiberglass substrates where long-term durability, fairing performance, and system integrity are critical. It offers excellent aged recoatability and can be overcoated for extended periods without sanding, making it highly efficient for professional workflows.

Recommended System

  • Step 1: Metal Substrate (Aluminum or Steel)
  • Step 2: Max Cor CF (Corrosion Primer)
  • Step 3: Hullgard Extra (Build + Fairing Base)
  • Step 4: Awlfair (Fairing Compound)
  • Step 5: Awlgrip 545 Primer
  • Step 6: Awlgrip Topcoat

Hullgard Extra is a two-component epoxy primer designed for corrosion protection and as a base for fairing systems.

  • Excellent anticorrosive properties
  • Designed for aluminum, steel, and fiberglass
  • Provides ideal surface for Awlfair
  • Extended recoat window (up to 6 months)
  • Mix Ratio: 10:1.5 (Base D6120 : Converter D3730)
  • Reducer: T0006
  • Reduction: 0–15% (typically none required)
Do not over-reduce. Excess solvent will reduce film build and performance.

Thoroughly mix base before adding converter. Power mixing is recommended for best consistency.

  • Steel: SSPC-SP10 blast with 2–3 mil profile
  • Aluminum: Abrade with 36 grit
  • Fiberglass: Degrease and sand with 180 grit
  • Wood: Sand with 80–180 grit
For best corrosion protection, apply over Max Cor CF on aluminum and steel.
  • Best Method: Airless spray
  • Spray: 1 coat
  • Brush/Roller: 2 coats recommended
  • Do NOT roll directly on metal
Roller application directly to metal can cause fiber snagging and poor finish.
  • Temperature Range: 55°F – 105°F
  • Dew Point: Must be at least 5°F above
  • Spray Coverage: ~187 ft² per gallon
  • Brush/Roller: ~313 ft² per gallon
  • Recommended DFT: ~3.9 mil (spray)

Actual coverage will vary based on surface profile, equipment, and technique.

  • Touch Dry: 1–2 hours
  • Hard Dry: 12–48 hours
  • Pot Life: ~8 hours
  • Recoat Minimum: 2 hours
  • Awlfair Application: 16 hours minimum
  • Max Recoat Window: Up to 6 months
No sanding required within recoat window if surface remains clean.

Professional Notes

  • This is a build primer — not a finish primer
  • Used to support fairing systems, not replace them
  • Critical step between corrosion primer and fairing
  • Do not skip Max Cor CF on raw metal
