What’s the Difference Between a Lamination Coat and a Hot Coat on a Surfboard?
In surfboard building, the lamination coat and the hot coat serve different purposes:
Lamination Coat
- First resin layer applied over fiberglass cloth
- Bonds the cloth to the foam blank
- Uses Silmar 249A (water-clear) or 249-B (brilliant white cure)
- No wax solution — remains slightly tacky for strong chemical bonding to the next coat
Hot Coat (Sand Resin)
- Applied after lamination is cured and trimmed
- Fills the weave of the fiberglass for a smooth surface
- Mix in Wax Solution (Mod C) at 1 oz per quart before adding MEKP
- Hardens fully for sanding and polishing
Pro Tip: The lamination coat provides strength, the hot coat provides finish — both are essential for a professional board.
