Why is timing critical when building a polyester tooling mold?
Most polyester tooling molds are built using contact (open) molding, where tooling gel coat is applied first and allowed to gel before laminating. The laminate bonds to the cured gel coat through a secondary bond, which is inherently weaker than a primary chemical bond.
If the gel coat or laminate is allowed to fully cure before the next layer is applied, shrinkage, poor adhesion, and surface defects can occur. For best results, mold fabrication must be designed, scheduled, and executed within a controlled time window so each layer is applied while still chemically receptive.
