What is Aerosil used for?

Aerosil is a lightweight fumed-silica powder used to thicken polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy resin. It changes liquid resin into a thicker, non-sagging mixture that can be applied to vertical surfaces, gaps, corners and bonding areas.

The amount of Aerosil added controls the consistency. A small amount reduces dripping, while additional Aerosil can produce a thicker paste. It is commonly used for:

• Thickening resin for bonding and fiberglass repairs
• Helping resin remain in place on vertical surfaces
• Creating fillets around corners and joints
• Controlling sag in mixtures containing other fillers

Aerosil is different from Q-Cell. Aerosil is primarily used to control thickness and sag, while Q-Cell creates a lighter mixture that is easier to sand and better suited for fairing. The two fillers can sometimes be blended when a fairing mixture needs improved sag resistance.

Aerosil produces very fine airborne dust. Wear suitable respiratory and eye protection, avoid creating dust and follow the product safety data sheet when handling it.
