Awlgrip Topcoat – Extreme Black

Awlgrip Topcoat in Extreme Black high-gloss marine finish

Why Extreme Black?

Awlgrip’s Extreme Black is the go-to choice when you want a deep, mirror-like black finish that stands up to harsh marine environments. Engineered for professional results in the yard or on the hard, it delivers superior gloss, color hold, and durability on hulls, decks, and topsides.

Key Benefits

  • Showroom gloss & DOI: Exceptional flow and leveling for that signature Awlgrip look.
  • Built to last: Outstanding resistance to UV, chemicals, staining, and abrasion.
  • Versatile application: Optimized for brush/roller and spray workflows.
  • Professional system compatibility: Apply over properly prepared epoxy primers such as Awlgrip 545 following the TDS.
  • Refinish friendly: Designed for yachts, center consoles, sportfishers, and performance vessels.

Recommended Uses

Ideal for fiberglass, properly primed aluminum, and composite surfaces in demanding marine environments. Use on hull sides, cabin tops, hardtops, and superstructures where premium gloss and durability are required.

Application Methods

Brush/Roll

  • Use the appropriate Awlgrip converter and reducer for brushing/rolling (per the current TDS).
  • Work in manageable sections; maintain a wet edge for best leveling and gloss.
  • Typical system: multiple thin coats to achieve target film build.

Spray

  • Use the specified Awlgrip spray converter and reducer (per the current TDS) and proper gun setup.
  • Apply medium-wet coats with appropriate flash times for a high DOI finish.
  • Control temperature and humidity for best results.

Surface Prep & Priming

For best adhesion and long-term performance, sand and solvent-wipe per the TDS and apply over a compatible epoxy primer such as Awlgrip 545. Always follow Awlgrip technical data sheets for substrate prep, mixing, induction (if specified), and recoat windows.

Coverage & Film Build

  • Theoretical coverage: Refer to the current Awlgrip TDS (actual coverage varies with application method, film thickness, and spray/brush losses).
  • Plan extra material for complex geometry, masking edges, and environmental losses.

Cleanliness & Conditions

  • Use lint-free rollers/brushes, clean air, and filtered reducers for a defect-free finish.
  • Apply within recommended temperature and humidity ranges.

System Tips

  • Color: Extreme Black (deep, uniform black with high gloss).
  • Mixing: Use the correct Awlgrip converter and reducer for brush/roll or spray per the TDS.
  • Maintenance: Wash with mild boat soap; avoid aggressive compounds to preserve gloss.

Note: Always consult the latest Awlgrip Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and follow all safety and PPE guidelines. Product names, converters, and reducers must match the application method and conditions.
